DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.) led all players with 14 kills and added 14 digs for the double-double to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team past Providence, 3-0, in the America East opener Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium.
UNH moves to 8-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Providence falls to 1-17 on the season and 0-1 in conference action. Set scores in the match were 25-23, 25-10 and 25-19.
In addition to Thatcher, senior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) added a double-double with 31 assists and 11 digs, while freshman Brenna Buckwalter (Evergreen, Colo.) also reached double-digits with 10 kills. Senior Jessie Schnepp (East Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the team with 16 digs.
In the opening set, Providence maintained a slim lead for most of the stanza, but the Wildcats refused to go away and trimmed the deficit to two, 23-21. From there, the Wildcats ended with four straight, highlighted by a pair of kills from Thatcher to seal the comeback 25-23 victory.
New Hampshire was in complete control throughout the second set after jumping out to an 11-3 lead. After Providence took advantage of a UNH attack error, the Wildcats answered right back a 7-2 run to move out in front at 18-7. The Friars would reach the double-digit mark but that would be all as the home side cruised to the 25-10 victory.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 23 when they wrap up non-conference play against intrastate rival Dartmouth at Lundholm Gymnasium. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
