VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS LIU, FALLS TO UCONN, 3-1

STORRS, Conn. –- The University of New
Hampshire volleyball team split a pair of matches falling to UConn
(3-1) before defeating Long Island (3-0) in the final day of
competition at the UConn Classic. The Wildcats move to 1-5 with the
split.
The set scores against UConn were (28-30, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16),
while set scores were (27-25, 25-12, 25-23) against Long
Island.
In the Connecticut match, Lindsay Fogarty
(Pleasanton, Calif.) and Justine Elliott
(Mitchellville, Md.) recorded 12 kills, four blocks and 10 kills,
five blocks, respectively for the Wildcats. Kate
Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) added five kills, 31 assists and
18 digs, while Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.), who
was named to the All-Tournament team of the UConn Classic, was the
defensive leader with 22 digs. UConn jumped out to a 13-5 lead in
the first set before a New Hampshire timeout. UNH would respond
with by nearly doubling-up the Huskies with a 20-11 run to give UNH
a 25-24 lead. Although the Huskies would break set-point twice, New
Hampshire captured the first set 30-28. UConn responded opening up
a 10-5 lead. UConn held a slim lead throughout the rest of the set
as the Wildcats cut the lead to one on four different occasions,
including 24-23, but could not come all the way back. The
'Cats rallied building a 7-2 lead in the third set. This time
it was Connecticut that would answer with a 12-7 run to knot it at
14-14. The action went back-and-forth with neither team holding a
lead of more than two. With the set tied 23-23 UConn tallied the
final two points for the two-point victory. In the fourth set, the
Huskies scored the first six points and broke out to a 9-2 lead.
New Hampshire would rally, but could not cut the lead below four as
the Huskies went on for the win.
Against LIU, it was once against Fogarty pacing the offense with
14 kills, four blocks and a .321 hitting percentage. In addition,
Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied 11
kills and a pair of blocks. Uitti tallied a season-high 41 assists
and added nine digs, while Heldman anchored the Wildcat defense
with 21 digs. In the first set, UNH held a slim lead throughout
most of the set until Long Island was able to knot it at 22-22. The
Wildcats scored the next two points to take a 24-22 lead. LIU broke
match point three-straight times and built a 25-24 lead of its own.
UNH scored the next three points for the set win. In the second
set, the 'Cats went out to a 14-6 lead and cruised to a
convincing 25-12 set victory. New Hampshire completed the sweep of
the Blackbirds in a highly competitive third set. Neither team held
a lead of more than three throughout the set, while there were
eight ties. UNH captured the two-point win as Acres killed the
final point for a 25-23 win.
UNH returns to action next weekend (Sept. 11-12) at the URI
Tournament. The Wildcats open on Friday, Sept. 11 (7 p.m.) against
the host Rams. They will also play Brown (11 a.m.) and Syracuse (4
p.m.) on Saturday. The 'Cats return home Sept. 18-19 for the
second-annual Holly Young Invitational. Wyoming, Arizona State and
Harvard make up the field in this year's tournament. Tickets
