DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Fairfield University, 3-1, and the University of Connecticut, 3-0, on Saturday in the final day of competition at the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gymnasium.
UNH moves to 0-11 on the season. The set scores against Fairfield were 16-25, 26-28, 30-28 and 21-25, while the set scores against UConn were 21-25, 20-25 and 11-25.
In other Holly Young Invitational action, Indiana State downed UConn, 3-0, and defeated Fairfield, 3-1, to win the tournament with a perfect 3-0 showing on the weekend. UConn finished 2-1 at the invitational, while Fairfield went 1-2 and UNH went 0-3.
Against Fairfield, seniors Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) and Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) led UNH with a pair of double-double performances. Laquerre posted 15 kills and a team-high 11 digs, while Keding registered 15 kills and 10 digs. Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) recorded a team-best 35 assists and senior Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) led the way defensively with seven blocks.
In the nightcap against Connecticut, Laquerre posted another double-double effort with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Keding notched 11 kills. Falcusan had 20 assists and freshman Sam Henke (Millersville, Md.) registered 10 digs.
In the opening set against Fairfield, the teams were all knotted up at 6-6 before the Stags went on a 6-3 run for the 12-9 advantage. UNH responded with a Laquerre kill, but the road team ended the stanza on a 13-4 run to take the set, 25-6, for the 1-0 lead. New Hampshire fought back in the second set with a 20-13 lead, but could not put away the win as the Stags came back to tie it up at 24-24. Fairfield went on to take the set at 28-26 to go up, 2-0. The teams were evenly matched throughout the third set until UNH broke a 28-28 tie with two straight for the win, capped off by a Desiree Ates (Regina, Saskatchewan) ace to cut the lead to 2-1. Despite the thrilling victory in the third set, the Wildcats dropped the fourth stanza by a 25-21 decision as the Stags sealed the 3-1 victory.
In the first set of the UConn match, the Huskies broke a 17-17 tie with three straight to take a 20-17 lead. The Wildcats managed to pull within two, but could not get any closer as UConn won the set at 25-22. In the second set, the Wildcats held a slim one-point lead at 13-12 until the Huskies reclaimed the advantage with four straight and went on to win at 25-20 to go up, 2-0. The Huskies won the third set at 25-11, behind a .370 hitting percentage, to seal the victory.
Following the final match, Laquerre was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts throughout the three-match weekend.
The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they visit Harvard at 7 p.m.
