BOSTON – Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) recorded 18 assists and 10 digs for her second double-double of the season, but it would not be enough as the University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Northeastern, 3-0, Tuesday night at Solomon Court.
With the loss, the Wildcats dip to 0-8 on the season while the Huskies improve to 4-2 overall. The set scores in the match were 14-25, 17-25 and 20-25.
Junior Desiree Ates (Regina, Saskatchewan) paced the offense for the Wildcats with nine kills, while senior Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) stepped up on the defensive end with a team-high five blocks.
In the opening set, Northeastern broke away from an early 4-4 tie with three straight for a 7-4 advantage, forcing a timeout by the visitors. The Huskies came right back with back-to-back points to stretch their lead to five and went on to capture the set by a 25-14 decision for the 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered with a quick 5-1 lead to open play in the second set, capitalizing on a Falcusan ace and several errors by the Huskies. Northeastern responded with a 6-2 run to pull even at 7-7 and went on to take a 12-8 lead, but UNH managed to tie it up again, 15-15, on a service ace by Dick. With the score even, the Huskies ended the set on a 10-2 run to claim the 25-17 win and go ahead, 2-0.
In the third set, the Wildcats raced out to a 3-0 lead but the Huskies responded with five straight for the 5-3 advantage. After UNH tied it up at 6-6, the home squad scored seven straight points at 13-6. UNH pulled within four at 22-18 later in the stanza, but could not equalize the score as Northeastern took the set, 25-20, to seal the victory.
The 'Cats next head home to host the Holly Young Invitational on Sept. 9-10 as they welcome Indiana State, Fairfield and Connecticut to Durham, N.H. for the annual contest. UNH will first take on Indiana State on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
