VOLLEYBALL SPLITS AT URI'S ART CARMICHAEL INVITATIONAL

KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team split a pair of matches in the final day of the Art Carmichael Invitational on the campus of the University of Rhode Island on Saturday. The Wildcats opened with a 3-1 win over Brown University and concluded with a 3-0 loss to Syracuse University. New Hampshire moves to 2-7. Set scores against Brown were 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-20, while set scores against Syracuse were 25-18, 25-17 and 25-14.

In a win over Brown, Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.), who was named to the All-Tournament team, and Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led the Wildcat offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) had a team-high 36 assists, while freshman Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) added 11 assists. Defensively, Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.) and Jayde Huxtable (St. Charles, Ill.) notched 15 and 13 digs, respectively.

Against Syracuse, Fogarty once again led the way with 11 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. Acres chipped in with eight kills and a team-best nine digs.

In the first set against Brown, the Bears opened up a 5-1 lead that was quickly erased with five-straight Wildcats points to make it 6-5. UNH extended the lead to 14-9. Brown would cut the lead to two at 17-15, but would get no closer as New Hampshire closed out the set on an 8-1 run, including six-straight points to end the set. Brown once again jumped out to an early lead at 4-1 in the second set. UNH responded with a 9-1 run to make it 10-5. They would never trail again in the set capturing a 25-20 win. The Wildcats got out to an 8-2 lead against the Bears in the third set. Brown rattled off six straight points to tie it at 8-8. Brown was holding on to a 14-13 advantage before four-straight points made it 19-13. The Wildcats would cut into the lead, but could not come all the way back. In the fourth and deciding set play was balanced and back-and-forth throughout. The teams were tied at 19-19 when New Hampshire went on a 6-1 run to capture the match.

In the opening set against the Orange, Syracuse went out to an early 7-2 lead. Trailing 9-5, UNH scored the next four to knot it a 9-9. Syracuse would regain the lead with four straight points of its own to make it 13-9. Syracuse held that lead for the remainder of the set and captured a 25-18 victory. The Orange led 8-7 in the second set until three-straight points extended their lead to 11-7. New Hampshire would trim to the lead to 15-14 and trailed 18-16 before the Orange closed out the set scoring seven of the final eight points of the set. In the deciding set, Syracuse went out to a 6-1 lead. UNH responded with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 8-7. Syracuse scored the next seven points to make it 15-7 and made that lead stand up, capturing the final set 25-14.

UNH returns to action on Tuesday night against Bryant University. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Smithfield, R.I. The ‘Cats return home Sept. 18-19 for the second-annual Holly Young Invitational.
