DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire volleyball team will play host to Seton Hall, Evansville and Rhode Island in the Holly Young Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13. Friday night, action begins in the newly named Holly Young Invitational with Evansville and Seton Hall at 4:30 p.m. The tournament, which is a long-standing tradition at UNH, was renamed this off-season to honor the memory of Holly Young. In January, Young, a former member of the volleyball program, lost her battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.  The Wildcats will play Rhode Island at 7 p.m. Friday night, Evansville at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and will conclude its part of the tournament with Seton Hall at 7 p.m. in the second annual “Dig for the Cure” event.

This year marks the second straight year UNH has joined the nationwide cause, as the Wildcats are among over 100 volleyball programs across the country participating in the event. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and the first 300 fans in attendance will receive pink t-shirts.
The foundation was started in 2003 by former UNC-Charlotte volleyball coach Lisa Marston after her mother survived breast cancer. Over the last four years, Marston’s team, along with many other programs across the country, have raised more than $108,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Last year, the “Dig for the Cure” event took off as over 60 volleyball programs across the country joined the cause and helped raise over $72,000, more than doubling the previous four-year total.

The Koman Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor her sister who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the foundation has over 75,000 volunteers and has raised more than $740 million for the fight against breast cancer.
As for this year’s “Dig for the Cure” event, Marston’s goal is to raise $300,000 towards the foundation and is encouraging anyone interested to help the cause. Fans wishing to donate can leave cash or checks (made out to “Susan G. Komen Foundation”) in the donation boxes during the event or mail them into the volleyball office at 145 Main St., Durham, NH 03824.
