HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) registered a team-high 13 kills and hit at a .321 clip, but it was not enough as the University of New Hampshire volleyball team dropped its season-opener to James Madison University, 3-0, at the JMU/Days Inn Invitational. The set scores were 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21. The Wildcats fall to 0-1 overall, while JMU improves to 1-0. UNH continues play at the JMU Invitational on Saturday with a pair of matches against Virginia (10 a.m.) and Murray State (4 p.m.).
The Dukes hit at a .298 clip for the match including a mark of .364 in the first set. The Wildcats hit at just a .198 clip with their best mark coming in the second set with a .250 clip.
Junior Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) and Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.) split time at setter, they had 16 and 13 assists, respectively. Defensively, Alyse Lahti (Pepper Pike, Ohio) led the way for the Wildcats with nine digs and a pair of service aces.
Several UNH newcomers saw their first collegiate action as five freshmen saw time for the 'Cats led by Pauline Acres (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), who had eight kills and four digs.
The Wildcats conclude play at the JMU Invitational on Saturday with matches against Virginia (10 a.m.) and Murray State (4 p.m.). UNH will open the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium against Bryant University. Tickets are available online at www.unhwildcats.com.
