WILDCAT VOLLEYBALL DOWNS COLGATE IN SEASON OPENER, 3-1

    HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore middle blocker Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) tallied a match-high 13 kills leading the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-1 victory in the season opener against Colgate University on Friday night at Cotterell Court in the opening match of the Colgate Classic. The game scores were 30-23, 27-30, 30-18 and 30-24.
    Bates also chipped in with a .256 hitting percentage, seven digs and six blocks in the victory, while seniors Toni Barnas (Cary, Ill.) and Emmy Blouin (St. Albert, Alberta) notched 11 and 10 kills respectively. Senior tri-captain Jess Compton (Woodridge, Ill.) also had an outstanding all-around performance with eight kills and eight total blocks.

    “It’s great to start the season off with a win, we played hard and we are looking forward to improving every match,” said UNH head coach Jill Hirschinger. 
    Sophomore tri-captain Kate Uitti (Pinckney, Mich.) posted 41 assists and 11 digs running the Wildcats offense, while sophomore libero Alyse Lahti (Pepper Pike, Ohio) turned in a solid defensive effort with a team-high 13 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.) turned in a team-high .333 hitting percentage and seven kills.
    Freshman Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.) made her collegiate debut for the Wildcats posting eight digs and one kill.
    The ‘Cats started off strong in Game 1 with 13 kills and a cumulative .429 team hitting percentage. They recorded 14 kills in the next two games and also hit at a .294 clip in Game 3. The Wildcats posted an impressive 18 blocks as a team in the match against the Red Raiders.
    The UNH volleyball team returns to action in the final day of the Colgate Classic with a 10 a.m. match against Rhode Island and a 3 p.m. match vs. Niagara. The Wildcats will play an exhibition match at home on Tuesday, August 28th vs. Bentley College. Game time at Lundholm Gymnasium is 7 p.m.
