UNH volleyball sweeps America East awards

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire volleyball team swept the America East awards on Monday as Jillian Ross (Naperville, Ill.) won Player of the Week honors, Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was named Setter of the Week and Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) earned the Rookie of the Week award for the second consecutive week.

UNH, which improved to 21-9 overall and 12-2 in the conference with wins against Northeastern and Maine last weekend, is the first team to sweep all three awards this season.

Ross, a senior outside hitter, averaged an impressive 6.0 kills per game with 42 kills in seven games. Her 24 kills was a match-high vs. Northeastern, as was her 18 kills against Maine. She also added 29 digs, two aces, one assist and three blocks in the pair of victories. For the season, Ross leads the team in both kills (337) and digs (229) and she is third in service aces (28).

Barnett, another senior, finished one shy of her personal-best effort with 71 assists in the match vs. Northeastern. She also had 41 helpers against Maine to compile 112 assists on the week. Barnett added 26 digs to the defensive effort. For the season, Barnett leads the team with 1,121 assists and needs 170 additional helpers to set the school's single-season record.

Ross and Barnett have helped this senior class of six Wildcats become the all-time winningest class in the program's history with 92 victories in four years.

Coler, an outside hitter, recorded 29 kills for a 4.14 per game average last weekend. Her .318 hitting percentage in those two matches raised her season number to .294, which is best on the team and second in the conference. She opened the week with 16 kills and 15 digs against Northeastern, then recorded 13 kills and 17 digs vs. Maine. Coler is tied for the team lead with 30 service aces. She is ranked fourth on the team in blocks (52) and is fifth in kills (244).

UNH, which has clinched a berth in the America East tournament at Hofstra University, returns to action Nov. 11 at Hofstra University. The regular season concludes Nov. 12 at Hartford.
