DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Utah, led by tournament MVP Katrena Ellett, won the UNH Volleyball Tournament by sweeping the three-game round-robin competition with victories against Massachusetts and New Hampshire on Saturday at Lundholm Gym. In the opening round, Utah bested Eastern Michigan, 3-0.
In the final game of the tournament, the Utes recorded a 3-0 victory against the host team, New Hampshire, which placed third in the field with a 1-2 record. The game scores were 12-15, 4-15 and 4-15. Earlier on Saturday, the champs bested second-place finisher UMass in straight games by scores of 15-8, 15-10, 15-2. UMass (2-1) rebounded with a convincing 15-3, 15-8, 15-5 victory against Eastern Michigan (0-3) in Saturday's evening session.
In the tournament final, UNH outside hitter Jillian Ross (Naperville, Ill.) notched a team-high nine kills and hit at a .304 clip in the losing cause. Freshman Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) chipped in with five kills and 10 digs.
Utah was led by junior middle blocker McKelle Stilson, who recorded a match-high 14 kills.
In Saturday's first game, Utah's Jen Snow-Richards led an impressive offensive attack with 13 kills and a .722 hitting percentage. Kim Turner and Katrena Ellett (11) also reached double figures in kills while Lucie Turkova recorded 49 assists. UMass was led by Jennifer Davis' nine kills.
Also in the early session, UNH recorded a 15-10, 16-14, 3-15, 15-5 win against Eastern Michigan behind a solid effort by Cole with a match-high 15 kills and 11 digs. EMU's Jennifer Nighswander and Sara Schaub each tallied nine kills.
In addition to Ellett, the MVP, UNH's Jen Walker, Lymarie Llovet and Rebecca Hasson of UMass as well as Utah's Jen Snow-Richards and Lucie Turkova were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Up next for New Hampshire is a Sept. 6 match at Boston College. The next Wildcat home game is Sept. 13 against those same Eagles of Boston College.
