DURHAM, N.H.- The University of New Hampshire volleyball team lost in five games as UMass Amherst edged out the 'Cats at the UNH Tournament, 3-2, on Friday night at Lundholm Gymnasium. The game scores were 14-16, 15-11, 17-15, 13-15, 15-10.
With the loss, the Widcats fall to 0-1 on the season, while UMass starts at 1-0.
UNH received a solid performance from senior middle hitter Jennifer Walker (Fulton, NY) who notched a team-high 17 kills and also added eight total blocks and eight digs. Senior outside hitter Jillian Ross Naperville, Ill.) also had a strong showing with 13 kills and 10 digs.
In game 1, UNH fought off game-point with score 14-13 and UNH came back to win the serving by Walker. In game 2, UMass turned the table coming back from a 10-4 deficit.
In the win for UMass, Rebecca Hasson tallied a game-high 19 kills, while teammate Lymarie Llovet posted 18 kills and 10 digs.
In the tournament opener, the University of Utah (1-0) rolled over Eastern Michigan University (0-1), 3-0. The game scores were 15-7, 15-2, 15-1. Utah sophomore Katrena Ellett notched a game-high nine kills, while Courtney Huffman recorded six kills and 10 digs in the loss for Eastern Michigan.
The Tournament concludes with two Saturday sessions. In the early session, UMass plays Utah at 10 a.m. and UNH faces Eastern Michigan at 12:30 p.m. In the late session, UMass plays Eastern Michigan at 4:30, while UNH and Utah faceoff in the 7 p.m. tilt.
