WHELAN NAMED AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East conference announced Monday that junior forward Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team was named America East Player of the Week for the week of Sept.4-9.

Whelan matched her career high in goals in back-to-back games last week when she tallied two against Holy Cross to power the Wildcats past the Crusaders, 5-0, and again scored a pair versus Iona to lead the ‘Cats to their third victory in a row. Whelan also had an assist on Michelle Sheehan’s (Belmont, Mass.) game-winning goal versus Holy Cross. All of Whelan’s goals (4) and assists (1) on the season came in the last week, giving her nine points on the year.

Whelan is tied for the conference lead in goals and points with Sheehan, who was named America East Player of the Week last week (Aug. 31-Sept. 3), marking the first time since 2002 that the Wildcats were awarded the honor in successive weeks. Senior goalkeeper Kristen Ouellette was named America East Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 6, with sophomore forward Chiara Best following her the week of Oct. 13.

UNH (3-1-0) plays its next game Sept. 11 when it plays host to Brown University at Lewis Fields at 4 p.m.
