Corvallis, Ore. – The University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Oregon State in the final match of the 2006 Oregon State Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon played at Lorenz Field.
The Wildcats (1-3-0) were held scoreless during two games this weekend. The Beavers (4-1-1) featured a powerful offense that compiled 17 shots on the day, while their stingy defense limited the Wildcats to nine shots on the afternoon.
The Beavers tallied what would be the game winning goal at the 12:57 mark on a thru ball from Jetta Sadusky to the foot of Jodie Taylor for her fourth tally of the season. The Wildcats kept the OSU offense quiet for the remainder of the half. However, the Beavers wouldn’t remain silent for much longer as Sophie Clough scored a header off a right corner kick at the 66:48 mark which was followed by a hard shot to the upper left side of the ‘Cats net just two minutes later from Jessica Velazquez. Beavers forward Red Nixon added one last insurance goal in the 82nd minute off a hard shot 30 yards out and just out of arms reach of UNH goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza (Kenmore, N.Y.). Gugliuzza (1-3) notched a game-high five saves. Although the offense failed to score, senior co-captain Hillary Mefferd (Portland, Ore.) returned to her home state and posted two of the Wildcats best opportunities of scoring.
The Beavers captured first place in the 2006 OSU Soccer Classic. OSU and Oregon each won twice, but on the tiebreaker, the Beavers had a superior goal differential (+8 to +2). New Hampshire and Iona each had two losses and were tied on goal differential (-5), so Iona took third place on the next tiebreaker, total goals scored (two to zero).
Junior midfielder Nicole Lucy (Keene, N.H.) was selected to the OSU All-Tournament team for her efforts on the playing field. UNH attempts to halt a three game losing streak on Friday (Sept. 15) against non-conference foe University of Rhode Island in their home opener at 7:00 p.m.
