DURHAM, N.H.Lia Barros (Sammamish, Wash.) of the University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team recently won the prestigious Nursing Departmental Scholar Award for her hard work while studying to become a registered nurse.

Only one winner per year based on academics and extracurricular activities receives the honor per department. The award is chosen by a student being nominated by a faculty member and then the other faculty members vote on which student and that student is nominate to the Health and Human Services School and they select one student from each major. It is an annual award that is given to one student from each major who has shown excellence in both academic and extra curricular activities.

Barros has excelled in the undergraduate-nursing program by achieving an impressive 3.88 grade point average, while demonstrating great maturity in balancing her academic and athletic demands. Barros’ is an exceptional team leader and hard worker as evident to her four years of varsity soccer and success in the classroom.
Barros plans on exploring cultural nursing in Brazil this summer before she starts her professional nursing career in the ICU at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
