DURHAM, N.H. - Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.), a freshman forward on the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team, was named to the Soccer Buzz Northeast Region All-Freshman Team, the magazine announced recently. Hourihan garnered Rookie of the Year and All-Rookie Team accolades from the America East conference in 2005.
Hourihan, a three-time America East Rookie of the Week selection in 2005, broke the UNH rookie points record of 21 established by Chiara Best in 2001with 26 points this season. She led the team in goals (12), game-winning goals (five) and points (26), and those numbers tied for No. 1 in the conference in goals (0.63 per game) as well as second in both game-winning goals and points (1.37 per game).
The 12 goals accounted for 44.4% of the team's total (27) and tied for fourth on UNH's list of single-season superlatives; the 26 points tied for the sixth-best single-season mark. Hourihan also broke the school record for consecutive games with a goal by scoring in six straight matches from Sept. 2-21. She closed that stretch with four consecutive multiple-goal games for a total of 10 goals in six games.
UNH qualified for the America East Championship for the fifth consecutive year -- the league's longest active streak -- and advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight time. The Wildcats were ousted from the tournament with a 2-1 overtime loss to BU to end the season at 9-8-2 overall.
