New Hampshire women's soccer upends Iona, 3-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Jackie Wishoski (Malden, Mass.) scored two goals to propel the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team to Saturday afternoon's 3-0 victory against Iona College in first-round action of the UVM Soccer Classic at the University of Vermont's Centennial Field.

Wishoski, the team leader in goals and points last year as a rookie, gave UNH (1-0-0) a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when she scored on a through-ball from Jacquelyn Kendall (Belchertown, Mass.). The 'Cats generated an 11-0 shot advantage in the first half and took that 1-0 lead into halftime.

Kristin Kearney (Sandown, N.H.) scored on a blast from 15 yards to give New Hampshire a 2-0 lead at 78:01. Chiara Best (Rose Valley, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the tally. Wishoski beat Iona goalie Ticiana DiCarlo in a 1-on-1 battle in the 87th minute to cap the scoring.

Liz MacKay (Scituate, Mass.) made two saves to record her first career shutout. DiCarlo finished with seven saves for the Gaels, who were outshot 24-4 in the match.

UNH concludes the UVM Soccer Classic vs. Stetson University on Aug. 31 (12 p.m.). The Wildcats' home opener is Sept. 10 vs. UMass. Match time at Bremner Field is 7 p.m.
