New Hampshire's Chiara Best named America East Rookie of the Week in women's soccer

BOSTON - Chiara Best (Rose Valley, Pa.), a freshman forward on the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team, was named Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday. She also received the award Oct. 8.

Best recorded six points on two goals and two assists in a pair of America East matches last week. On Friday, the former standout of Strath Haven High School assisted on the game-winning goal and scored the team's third and fourth goals in a 4-1 victory at Vermont.

The five-point game increased her season total to 20, a UNH rookie scoring record. The previous benchmark of 19 points was shared by Niki Begin (1994) and Mary Beth Sydlowski (1988).

Sunday against Hartford, Best recorded an assist in a UNH three-goal outburst in a span of 2:09.

In the month of October, Best has 17 points (seven goals, three assists) in six games.

Best, who has one three-goal game and a pair of two-goal games to her credit, leads New Hampshire in goals (eight), assists (five) and points (21). She is the first Wildcat freshman to score double figures in points since (now-senior) Angeline Alexakos tallied 12 points in 1998. Her 21 points is the most by a UNH player since 1995, when Kim Boyle finished with 24 points and Tiffany Johnson had 22.

Best and her New Hampshire teammates return to action with an Oct. 26 home match vs. Towson University. Game time at Lewis Fields is 3 p.m. The Wildcats also play host to Delaware on Oct. 28 (1 p.m.).
