FORD WINS GIANT SLALOM; UNH IN 4TH PLACE AT DARTMOUTH AFTER DAY 1

N.H.Willie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) captured first place in the men’s giant slalom for the second time in the past three weeks to lead the University of New Hampshire ski team to fourth place following the first day of competition at the Dartmouth Carnival on Friday.

The men’s alpine squad compiled a carnival-best 115 points and the women’s team amassed 105 points to place third. The Nordic teams combined to produce 132.5 points for an overall score of 352.5.

Dartmouth College is atop the standings with 466 points and is followed by Middlebury College (411 points) and University of Vermont (377).

Ford, who won the GS at the UNH Winter Carnival, sat in first place after the first run on the Dartmouth Skiway course with a time of 54.94 seconds. The junior recorded the second-fastest time of 53.04 in the second run and held on to first place with an overall time of 1:47.98.

Four other Wildcats skied to a top-10 finish in the alpine competitions. Michael Cremeno (Pembroke, N.H.) completed his first run in 55.37 and the second run in 53.87 for an overall mark of 1:49.24, which was seventh best on the day. Sean McNamara (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) vaulted into the top 10 – at 10th place -- with a second run of 53.32 that gave him an aggregate time of 1:50.15.

Veronique Archambault-Leger (Verdun, Quebec) led the women’s contingent in fourth place overall at 1:51.90. She opened the day with a mark of 57.18, then recorded the second-fastest time (54.72) in the second run. Aileen Farrell (Ottawa, Ontario) completed her two runs in 57.82 and 55.46 to finish in seventh place (1:53.28). Cynthia Tessier (Radon, Quebec) finished just outside of the top 10 in 11th place. She skied times of 58.03 and 56.06 for an overall time of 1:54.09.

The UNH women’s Nordic team tallied the fourth-highest score with 77 points. Marlijne Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) was the first ‘Cat across the finish line in the 5K Classic race at the Dartmouth Outing Club as she was clocked in 16:21.2. Natasha Kullas (Timmins, Ontario) completed the course in 16:26.2 to take 15th place and Katie Miller (Lenox, Mass.) rounded out the team scoring in 24th place with a time of 16:45.5.

Steven Bedard (Cheshire, Mass.) led the Wildcats in the men’s 10K Classic in 25th place at 28:25.2. Harrison Harb (Contoocook, N.H.) was the next UNH skier to cross the finish line and he took 31st place with a time of 28:40.0. Dylan McGuffin (Concord, N.H.) completed the team scoring in 36th place overall at 28:59.6.

The Dartmouth Carnival concludes Feb. 14 at the same venues.
