CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, led by third-year head coach Michael Daly, tied with Stony Brook University for third in the 2012 America East Women's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll that was released Wednesday afternoon.
UNH received one first-place vote and a total of 24 points. The University at Albany, which went unbeaten in league play en route to winning the 2011 America East tournament title, collected five of a possible six first-place votes and a total of 34 points to finish atop the poll as the preseason favorite. Boston University garnered 25 points to edge out UNH and Stony Brook. UMBC (21 points; one first-place vote), the University of Vermont (13) and Binghamton (six) complete the poll.
New Hampshire, which has advanced to a league-record 14 consecutive America East Championship tournaments, returns senior midfielders Ilana Cohen (Andover, Mass.) and Kate Keagins (Bay Shore, N.Y.) as its top returning scorers, and both are captains of the 2012 squad. Cohen garnered All-Conference First Team honors a year ago as she tied for second on the team in assists and ranked third in both goals and assists. Keagins was one of two Wildcats to record double digits in goals, assists, ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers; she led America East in CTO and ranked second in GB, and was the team's leading point scorer.
UNH opens the season Feb. 25 against 14th-ranked Dartmouth College. Game time at Memorial Field is 1 p.m. The Wildcats begin America East play March 24 at home against Binghamton.
