BOSTON -- Sarah Von Bargen (East Setauket, N.Y.), a freshman attack on the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, was named Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday. Von Bargen is a three-time recipient of the award who received the same honor April 3 and March 13.
Von Bargen recorded five points -- all on goals -- as well as four ground balls and two draw controls to propel UNH to victories against both Harvard University (19-10) and Binghamton University (18-2) last week. She finished with three goals, two ground balls and one draw control vs. Binghamton. Von Bargen scored 25 seconds into the game vs. the Bearcats to set the tone for the game, then struck again twice more in the first half to extend the Wildcats' lead to 4-0 (at 3:42) and 9-0 (at 8:56). With that three-goal effort, she broke UNH's record for goals by a rookie and now has 30 this season. Earlier in the week, Von Bargen scored once in each half against Harvard.
Von Bargen is ranked second on the team in goals (30) and fifth in points (34). She leads the Wildcats in draw controls with 28 and is second in caused turnovers with 15. With those numbers, Von Bargen is sixth in America East in goals per game (2.31) and fifth in draw controls per game (2.15). Von Bargen scored a goal in each of her first nine games, the longest such streak to start a career on record at UNH. Her other season highlights include a personal-best six goals -- and six points -- against Marist College, and she has scored at least one goal in 12 of 13 games this season.
UNH (9-4, 4-0 America East) has won eight consecutive games to climb to the top of the conference standings. The Wildcats play their last home game of the regular season April 18 vs. the University of Connecticut. Game time at Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
