Vaattovaara Named WHEA Co-Defensive Player of the Week

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman goalie Vilma Vaattovaara (Veikkola, Finland) was named the WHEA Co-Defensive Player of the Week as announced by Women's Hockey East Monday.

The netminder made her first collegiate start in New Hampshire's 4-3 win in its season opener at Syracuse University. Vaattovaara made 35 saves on the 38 shots she faced, including 14 in the second period and 15 in the third to contain the lead. In the second game of the trip, Vaattovaara came in to start the second period and played the remainder. She did not relinquish a goal while on the ice and made 12 saves.

The Wildcats are back on the ice for their home opener Tuesday, Oct. 16 as they host Hockey East foe Vermont. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.
