BOSTON -- Nicole Gifford (Ennismore, Ontario) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team's 5-1 loss to 10th-ranked Northeastern University at Matthews Arena on Sunday afternoon.
UNH, which skated to a 3-3 tie at home against Northeastern on Saturday afternoon to extend its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1), moved to 6-10-3 overall and 0-6-2 in Hockey East. NU improved to 12-4-1, 7-2-1.
Lindsey Minton (Richardson, Texas), in her first start since Nov. 13, made 22 saves. NU goalie Florence Schelling made 11 of her 26 saves in the first period.
The Wildcats recorded an 11-9 shot advantage in the first period, but the Huskies led 2-0 at the first intermission. Kendall Coyne (one goal, one assist) struck first at 9:39 and Dani Rylan extended the advantage to two goals at 15:04.
Following a scoreless second stanza, Brittany Esposito (one goal, one assist) scored 39 seconds into the third period and Siena Falino gave the home team to 4-0 at 9:31.
Gifford scored an extra-skater goal at 12:17 to spoil Schelling's shutout bid. Kristine Horn (Utica, Mich.) and Maggie Hunt (Naperville, Ill.) were credited with assists. It was Horn's ninth assist of the season, which moved her into a tie with Gifford atop the team leaderboard.
Casey Pickett (one goal, one assist) netted an empty-net goal 61 seconds later to close the scoring.
New Hampshire returns to action Dec. 9 (7 p.m.) at Harvard University and the Wildcats close the 2011 calendar schedule at home against intrastate rival Dartmouth College on Dec. 11 (2 p.m.).
