Women's Ice Hockey Selected Seventh In Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll

WAKEFIELD, Mass.  – The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team was selected seventh in the 2011-12 Women's Hockey East Association Preseason Coaches Poll that was released Tuesday. 

The Wildcats, who went 14-16-2 overall and tied for sixth in the final conference standings at 7-13-1, received a total of 21 points to place three points behind the University of Vermont and three points ahead of the University of Maine in the poll.

Boston University, the defending regular-season champions, garnered six first-place votes and 55 points to earn the distinction as preseason favorites. Boston College, which won last year's league tournament title, received the other two first-place votes and 51 points. Northeastern University (42 points), Providence College (39) and the University of Connecticut (30) round out the top five. 

The league's 10th anniversary season opens when Maine plays host to Sacred Heart at Alfond Arena on Sept. 23. The conference schedule commences Oct. 14 with UNH facing off against Boston College at the Whittemore Center.

New Hampshire plays an exhibition game Sept. 24 against Ontario Hockey Academy. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m. UNH opens the 2011-12 season Sept. 30 in the first of a two-game series at Niagara University. The Wildcats' home opener is Oct. 7 vs. Colgate University.
