COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Kacey Bellamy (Westfield, Mass.), a senior defenseman and captain of the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named one of the 32 players on the U.S. Women’s National Team preliminary roster that will compete in a tryout/training camp March 24-30 at the Olympic Center (Lake Placid, N.Y.). The announcement was made Friday by USA Hockey.
The final 21-player roster will be announced March 26 and those players will go on to defend the United States’ world title at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship from April 4-12 in Hameenlinna, Finland.
Bellamy, one of 10 defensemen vying for a spot on the National Team, is one of 20 players who won a gold medal at the Four Nations Cup in November 2008. She also won gold at the 2008 IIHF World Women’s Championship last April in China and earned silver medals as a member of the U.S. team at the Four Nations Cup in 2006 and 2007.
This season for the Wildcats, Bellamy has recorded six goals and 22 assists for 28 points in 34 games to rank third nationally in defensemen scoring. She is second on the team in plus/minus (+23), tied for third in assists and fourth in points. Bellamy was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star last week, then scored a goal in both the semifinal and final games of the Hockey East Championship Tournament to lead the Wildcats to their fourth consecutive league tournament title and garner Tournament MVP and All-Tournament Team accolades.
Bellamy has compiled 27 goals and 80 assists for 107 points in 142 career games. She is one point shy of tying the UNH benchmark for career points by a defenseman that is shared by Kristen Thomas and Cindy MacKay.
Bellamy and the rest of the UNH Wildcats (24-5-5) return to action March 14 vs. the University of Minnesota Duluth in an NCAA quarterfinal game at the Whittemore Center. Game time is 1 p.m.
