BOSTON --  Martine Garland (Toronto, Ontario) and Sam Faber (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) of the fourth-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team were named to the New England Hockey Writers Div. I Women’s All-Star Team on Wednesday. Garland is a repeat selection from last season.

Garland, a junior defenseman and captain, helped lead a Wildcats’ defense that ranked third in the nation with a 1.51 goals against average and fifth with a .894 penalty kill percentage. She was also a strong force on the offensive attack this year as well.  Garland ranked 10th nationally in defensemen scoring with a 0.84 points per game average and 21st in the nation in assists at 0.69 per game. She competed in all 37 games played this season and recorded six goals and 25 assists for 31 points. Her assists and point totals were good for second and fourth on the team rankings, respectively. She also led the team in plus/minus at +37.

Garland’s other honors in 2007 included being named a Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Top 10 Finalist and a Hockey East All-Star First Team selection.

Faber, a sophomore forward, led UNH in points (46) and assists (29), and placed second in both goals (17) and plus/minus rating (+32). Her three game-winning goals ranked second and her four power-play tallies ranked third. Faber ranked No. 11 in the nation in assists (0.88 per game) and No. 12 in points (1.39 ppg). She helped lead the offense to a No. 3 national ranking (4.03 goals per game) and the power play to No. 7 (.224).

Faber’s other 2007 honors included Hockey East First Team All-Star, Hockey East All-Tournament Team and Hockey East ITECH Three Star Award.

The New England Hockey All-Stars and other award winners will be honored at the hockey writers’ annual banquet, which is April 11 at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass.
