WAKEFIELD, Mass.Jackie Wedster (Chicago, Ill.), a senior defenseman on the third-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s ice hockey team, was named Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Wedster recorded her first multiple-point game of the season with two points – both on assists – and also recorded a plus/minus rating of +5 in UNH’s 6-2 victory at (then-) ninth-ranked University of Connecticut on Jan. 6. Wedster, who has played each of the last 13 games on the blue line after opening the season as a forward for five games, was credited with an assist on the game’s first goal when her shot from the right point was redirected into the net by teammate Angela Taylor (Paisley, Scotland). She was also credited with an assist on the tally that gave the Wildcats a 5-0 lead early in the third period.
In 18 games this season, Wedster has recorded four points on two goals and two assists. Her plus/minus rating of +14 is second among UNH defensemen and fourth overall.
In 111 career games, 21 as a defenseman, Wedster has compiled 22 goals and 24 assists for 46 points. Her career highlights include three two-goal efforts and a three-assist, four-point game against Boston College in the 2005 season. She was the 2005 recipient of UNH’s Sue Merz Award, which is also known as the Seventh Player Award.
New Hampshire (15-2-3 overall, 7-1-0 Hockey East) returns to action this weekend with a two-game home series against the University of Maine at the Whittemore Center. The teams face off Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. and again Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
