MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team is ranked No. 6 in the nation in the inaugural 2005-06 Division I Women's Poll that was released Monday evening.

The Poll is compiled by U.S. College Hockey Online and consists of 15 voters - 12 Div. I head coaches and three women's hockey writers.

UNH, which successfully defended its 2004 Hockey East regular-season title by winning a share of the 2005 crown, finished the 2005 season with a 21-8-6 overall record and No. 9 ranking in the Poll.

The Wildcats, who were picked No. 1 in the Hockey East Coaches Poll that was released Sept. 29, open the season Oct. 15 with a league game vs. the University of Maine. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.

In addition to league rival Providence College, which is ranked No. 9 in the poll, UNH will face co-No. 1 Wisconsin, fifth-ranked Mercyhurst College, No. 7 Harvard (twice) and No. 8 Dartmouth (twice) this season.

Hockey East programs Connecticut and Boston College also received votes in this week's poll.
