WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a sophomore forward on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named Player of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Hekle, who leads UNH in both goals (eight) and points (17) this season, propelled the Wildcats to Saturday's 4-1 victory against Minnesota State University in day-one action of the 2004 UNH Thanksgiving Tournament at the Whittemore Center. The first of her two goals proved to be the game-winning tally as she gave the 'Cats a 2-1 lead in the first period. She matched her career high of two goals with a third-period tally to give UNH a 4-1 lead. Hekle's strong play in the two-day event garnered All-Tournament Team recognition.
In addition to leading the team in goals and points as well as power-play goals (five), Hekle ranks third in assists with nine. She is currently No. 19 in the nation in goals-per-game (0.67), No. 20 in points-per-game (1.42) and 11th in power-play goals.
Hekle is the first repeat recipient of the Player of the Week honor in the 2004-05 season. She also earned the award Oct. 18. This also marks the third time this season that a Wildcat has been named league Player of the Week. Lindsay Hansen (Northport, N.Y.) received that distinction last week.
UNH (9-2-1 overall, 4-0-0 Hockey East) returns to action Dec. 1 at Dartmouth College. The next Wildcat home game is Dec. 4 vs. UConn. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.
