WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Melissa Bourdon (Ile Bizard, Quebec), a freshman goaltender on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was named Rookie of the Week by Hockey East on Monday.
Bourdon stopped all 28 shots she faced to shut out 10th-ranked Princeton University on the road in her collegiate debut, a 3-0 win vs. the Tigers on Saturday. Bourdon made half of her 28 saves in the second period and also withstood a span of 1:23 late in the third period when PU pulled its goalie in favor of an extra skater.
Bourdon became the fifth UNH goalie to record a shutout in her collegiate debut, and her 28 saves is the highest total of the five who accomplished the feat.
Bourdon is the third UNH player to receive Rookie of the Week honors this season from Hockey East. Nicole Heckle (Winnipeg, Manitoba; Nov. 3) and Sadie Wright-Ward (Durham, N.H.; Oct. 27) were previous Wildcat honorees.
Eighth-ranked New Hampshire (4-2-2 overall, 1-0-1 Hockey East) plays a home-and-home series this week against Hockey East rival Northeastern University. The Wildcats play host to the Huskies on Nov. 20 (7 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center.
