WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Nicole Hekle (Winnipeg, Manitoba), a freshman forward on the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team, was honored as Rookie of the Week by Hockey East on Monday night.
Hekle recorded four points last weekend with three goals and an assist in a pair of road games against the University of North Dakota. In the series opener (UNH win, 6-2), she gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead 1:45 into the game - that tally was her first career point - and figured in UNH's final two goals of the game with an assist on the fifth goal and by capping the game's scoring with 1:45 to play. In the team's 3-2 loss, her goal tied the game 1-1 early in the second period.
Hekle leads the Wildcats in goals (three), is tied for the team lead in points (four) and has a team-best .375 shooting percentage (three goals on eight shots). Her two power-play goals, both of which came Nov. 1, also leads the 'Cats. Hekle ranks third on the team in plus/minus at +3.
Ninth-ranked New Hampshire (2-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 Hockey East) plays host to No. 5 St. Lawrence University for a two-game series this weekend. The teams face off Nov. 7 (7 p.m.) and Nov. 9 (2 p.m.) at the Whittemore Center.
