No. 8 UNH women's ice hockey skates to 1-1 tie vs. UConn

DURHAM, N.H.. - Rebecca Paul (Sudbury, Ont.) scored a first-period goal and Brittany Busa (Concord, Mass.) made 14 saves in her collegiate debut to lead the eighth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 1-1 Hockey East tie against the University of Connecticut at the Whittemore Center.

UNH, which defeated UConn 4-2 in Friday's season opener for the 'Cats at UConn Ice Arena, is now 1-0-1 both overall and in Hockey East. UConn is 1-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead late in the first period (at 18:43) when Vicki Davis (Edmonton, Alberta) skated behind the net and centered the puck to Paul, who in turn fired a shot into the net.

The Huskies netted a goal early in the second period to tie the score. Megan McLeod, with the assistance of Jennifer Houlden and Angie Wallace, scored from the low slot at 1:34.

With the score tied at 1 through two stanzas, UNH controlled play in the third period to generate a 10-1 shot advantage. The Wildcats were held at bay by UConn goalie Kaitlyn Shain, however. The same held true in overtime, in which Shain, who finished with 43 saves, stopped all seven shots on goal.

Shain was pulled in favor of an extra skater with 1.9 seconds remaining in the extra session, but the draw from the faceoff to the right of UNH's Busa was won into the corner to end the game.

Busa made half of her 14 saves in the first period.

New Hampshire returns to action Nov. 1-2 at the University of North Dakota. The next Wildcat home game is Nov. 7 vs. St. Lawrence University. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
