No. 8 UNH women's hockey rolls past McGill, 5-0

DURHAM, N.H. - Senior assistant captain Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ont.) scored two goals and Lindsay Hansen (Northport, N.Y.) recorded three assists to lead the No. 8 University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Sunday afternoon's 5-0 victory against McGill University in an exhibition game at the Whittemore Center.

The teams skated through two periods of scoreless hockey - despite a 23-3 shot advantage for the home team - before UNH broke the game open with four goals in the initial eight minutes of the third period. Rebecca Paul (Sudbury, Ont.), a sophomore transfer from Northeastern University, gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead from close range at 1:34 when senior captain Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) made a centering pass to Hansen, who in turn touched the puck across the slot to Paul.

Hansen, the reigning Hockey East Rookie of the Year, also set up UNH's next two goals at 3:37 and 6:50. Vicki Davis (Edmonton, Alb.) gave the 'Cats a 2-0 goal with a shorthanded tally as she broke in alone on Martlet goaltender Delphine Roy (34 saves). Gordon's first goal came from the left doorstep as she redirected the puck past Roy.

Jackie Wedster (Chicago, Ill.), with the assistance of fellow rookie Martine Garland (Toronto, Ont.), scored 69 seconds later - at 7:59 - from the right circle. Gordon capped the scoring on an unassisted goal with 1:01 remaining.

New Hampshire starting goaltender Maghan Grahn (Roseau, Minn.), a sophomore transfer from Minnesota-Duluth, made three saves in 30:19. Freshman goalie Brittany Busa (Concord, Mass.) played the final 29:41 in net and earned the win by stopping eight shots. All eight saves were recorded in the final frame.

UNH opens the regular season Oct. 24 (7 p.m.) on the road against Hockey East foe University of Connecticut. The home opener is Oct. 26 vs. UConn. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 2 p.m.
