NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. - Stephanie Jones (Kimberley, B.C.) recorded a career-high five points with three goals and two assists to lead the fifth-ranked University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team to Friday night's 7-1 victory against Niagara University at Dwyer Arena.
UNH, which recorded 7-4 and 6-2 home victories vs. the Purple Eagles earlier this season, improved to 23-5-2 while Niagara fell to 12-14-3.
Carolyn Gordon (Petrolia, Ont.) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 16:02 of the first period when she scored on a high wrist shot from the low slot. Jones, who set up Gordon's tally, scored 1:20 later to extend UNH's advantage to 2-0. In a 2-on-1, Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ont.) carried the puck into the right circle and made a centering pass to Jones, who also beat NU goalie Jennifer Mascaro with a high shot. Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) was also credited with an assist.
Niagara trimmed the deficit to 2-1 at 10:59 of the second period when Teresa Del Monte scored a power-play goal. Erin Toth made the pass to Del Monte in the low slot.
UNH regained a two-goal advantage, 3-1, on a goal by Randi MacMaster (Syracuse, N.Y.) at 14:22, then Gordon scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season with 37 seconds remaining in the middle stanza.
Jones scored at 1:21 and 7:24 of the final frame to complete her hat trick and give the Wildcats a 6-1 lead. Kristine Butt (Pembroke, Mass.) capped the scoring at 8:39.
UNH goalie Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped 15 of 16 shots in 55:23 to earn the victory. Hillary Ensor (Grapevine, Texas) played the final 4:37 and made three saves. Niagara starting goalie Jennifer Mascaro made 11 saves and allowed four goals in two periods. Lindsey Taylor played the final frame and stopped seven of 10 shots.
New Hampshire returns to action Feb.22 at Providence College. The next Wildcat home game is Feb. 25 (7 p.m.) vs. Quinnipiac University.
Niagara travels to Mercyhurst College for a Feb. 16 (2 p.m.) contest.
