DURHAM, N.H. - The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team swept all three ECAC weekly honors on Monday as Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ontario) was named Player of the Week, Jennifer Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) earned Goaltender of the Week honors and Kristen Thomas (Wilmington, Mass.) won Rookie of the Week.
The trio helped UNH begin the season 3-0-0 with a 7-0 victory at the University of Findlay and a weekend sweep at Ohio State ( by scores of 4-0, 3-1).
Thornton, a senior forward and co-captain, recorded six points on three assists and three goals. She opened the season with three goals and an assist against Findlay. Huggon, a sophomore, recorded a career-high 38 saves in the season-opener at Findlay. She followed that with a 35-save performance at OSU to record her fifth career shutout and back-to-back shutouts for the second time in her career. Huggon closed the week with a 30-save effort, including 17 in the second period, to improve to 3-0-0. Overall, Huggon stopped 103 of 104 shots for a .990 save percentage and a 0.33 goals-against-average.
Thomas, a defenseman, netted three goals last week. She made an immediate impact in her first game as a Wildcat by netting the game-winning goal against Findlay. She also scored two power-play goals in the 3-1 victory against the Buckeyes.
New Hampshire plays its home opener Nov. 4 against Dartmouth College. Game time at the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m.
