New Hampshire women's hockey falls to Northeastern, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. - The eighth-ranked Northeastern University women's hockey team ended a five-game losing streak with Sunday afternoon's 2-1 ECAC victory against No. 9 University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center.

Northeastern, now 12-7-0 overall and 9-4-0 ECAC, took a 1-0 lead at 8:59 of the first period when Brooke Whitney netted her second shorthanded --(and 15th overall) goal of the season.

UNH (14-9-0, 10-6-0) tied the game at 17:13. Kira Misikowetz (Mississauga, Ont.) maneuvered through the defense in the left circle and skated alone in front to tuck the puck into the net. Nicole Stefanilo (Sanford, Maine) and Annie Fahlenbock (Toronto, Ont.) set up the goal, which was Misikowetz's 11th of the year.

The Huskies regained the lead, 2-1, on a Lisa Giovanelli tally at 11:27 of the second period. Her wrist shot from the left circle was set up by Jennifer Santerre and Erica Archambeau.

The Huskies maintained their one-goal lead despite being shorthanded two players for a full two minutes, including the opening 1:39 of the third period. NU goalie Erika Silva (22 saves) stopped three point-blank shots the rest of the way to preserve the victory.

UNH pulled goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.; 29 saves) with 1:18 remaining but could not get the puck past Silva.

New Hampshire continues its four-game homestand Jan. 26 (7 p.m.) against the University of Minnesota.
