Niagara, NY-Senior forward Melissa McKenzie (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored two goals including the game winner to lead the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team over Niagara University 5-3 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 8-2-0 overall and 6-2-0 in the ECAC Conference. Niagara falls to 9-3-1 overall and 5-3-0 in league action.
The Wildcats struck first five minutes into the first period when McKenzie scored her first goal of the game off of senior forward Samantha Holmes (Mississauga, Ont.) for a 1-0 lead. Niagara knotted the game 1-1 at 11:13 as freshman forward Candice Ceelen scored a power play goal.
In the second period, Niagara took the lead 2-1 with a goal at 14:28 by sophomore forward Brooke Bradburn. Sophomore foward Stephanie Romain assisted on the goal. The Wildcats responded less than four minutes later as senior forward Carisa Zaban (Glenview, Ill.) tallied her 10th goal of the season for a 2-2 tie. Niagara regained the lead 3-2 at 19:28 with a goal by Romain and assisted by Bradburn.
The Wildcats scored three third period goals by senior foward Tina Carrabba (Billerica, Mass.), McKenzie and senior defenseman Kerry Maher (Clifton Park, NY) to seal the deal 5-3.
UNH freshman goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) made 23 saves in the win. Niagara sophomore netminder Tania Pinelli stopped 29 shots.
The Wildcats travel to Maine Saturday for a 7 p.m. start.
