Durham, N.H.-Senior forward Samanta Holmes (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the game winning goal to lift the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team over Brown University 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the Whittemore Center. With the win, UNH improves to 5-1-0 and 3-1-0 in the ECAC Conference. Brown falls to 4-2-0 and 3-1-0 in conference play.
The Wildcats got on the board in the frst period when senior Carisa Zaban (Glenview, Ill.) put one past Brown goaltender Ali Brewer for a 1-0 lead. Senior defenseman Kerry Maher (Clifton Park, NY) and senior Melissa McKensie (Bethel Park, Pa.) assisted on the power play goal.
Maher extended the Wildcat led 2-0 in the second period with a slapshot from the blueline. Zaban and senior defenseman Jaime DeGriselles (Lakeview, Minn.) recorded assists on the power play goal. Brown cut the lead 2-1 less than 14 minutes later when defenseman Tamra Jones put one through the outstretchd arms of UNH freshman goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.). Concord nativeTara Mounsey assisted on the power play goal.
In the third period, Holmes rifled a shot over Brewer's shoulder for a 3-1 Wildcat lead. Sophomore forward Kelly McManus (Dedham, Mass.) and junior forward Jenn Wildman (London, Ont.) notched assists on the game winer. Brown closed out the scoring 3-2 with a goal by forward Jordan Jiskra and assisted by Mounsey.
Huggon finished with 27 saves, including a few lasers by Mounsey. Brewer made 21 saves in a losing cause. The Wildcats travel to Provdence Saturday for a 2 p.m. start. They take on Northeasern on Sunday in Boston at 2 p.m.
