UNH Women's Hockey Rolls Past Yale, 12-2

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Senior Melissa McKenzie (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored two goals and assisted on four others and classmate Carisa Zaban (Glenview, Ill.) recorded a hat trick and two assists to power the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team to Saturday afternoon's 12-2 ECAC victory against Yale.

Zaban gave UNH (19-7-0 overall, 12-5-0 league) a lead it would not relinquish just 37 seconds into the game. The 'Cats took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission on tallies by Kerry Maher (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and McKenzie.

McKenzie netted the first of five UNH goals in the middle stanza. Michelle Thornton (Gloucester, Ontario) and Tina Carrabba (Billerica, Mass.) each potted a pair of second-period goals to give the visitors a 7-0 lead before Yale scored at 15:22. A pair of Zaban goals bookended the scoring in the third period; Kali Wilson (East Lansing, Mich.) and Carrabba scored UNH's other goals over the final 20 minutes.

Freshman goaltender Jen Huggon (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped 14 of 16 shots to record her 11th victory of the season.

Zaban now has 60 points on the season and 251 career points. She is four points shy of tying Kathy Bryant (1977-81) for the most career points in UNH history.

Yale's Katie Hirte finished with 34 saves.

UNH returns to action Feb. 16 against Maine. Game time is 7 p.m.
