Durham, N.H.- Senior forward Samantha Holmes recorded her second straight hat trick and third of the year as the University of New Hampshire women's hockey team shutout Ohio State, 7-0, Saturday night.
Holmes tallied two of her goals in the second period and added the third in the last stanza to lead the Wildcats to the victory.
After playing through a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Kelly McManus put the Wildcats on the board with a goal at the 5:03 mark. Junior center Michele Thornton and senior defenseman Jaime DeGriselles assisted on what proved to be the game-winner. McManus struck again just 30 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Holmes scored the next three goals to give UNH a 5-0 lead.
In the third period, freshman forward Kristine Butt scored her first collegiate goal of an assist from junior center Kali Wilson for a 6-0 lead. Wilson then found the back of the net for her second goal of the season off assists from senior forward Carisa Zaban and junior defenseman Brandi Kerns.
Freshman goaltender Jen Huggon recorded her third shutout of the the year as she stopped seven shots. Ohio State goaltender Melissa Glaser made 38 saves in a losing cause.
UNH and Ohio State face off on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the second game of the weekend series.
