BOSTON - By leading the Wildcats in scoring in games against Hartford and Vermont over the past week, sophomore forward Ray Williams (Mississauga, Ontario) has been named the America East Wilson Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.
Williams averaged 17 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks per game as the Wildcats suffered a tough loss to Hartford, 61-60, on February 16 before coming back to defeat Vermont, 70-65, on February 19. This is the first time in her collegiate career that Williams has received the Player of the Week honor.
In the game against the Hawks, Williams started the UNH comeback by scoring ten consecutive Wildcat points early in the second half to cut the Hartford lead from 22 points to 15 points. She finished the game with a career-high 20 points, shooting 10-of-15 from the field, plus she pulled down nine rebounds, five on the offensive end, and blocked two shots.
Fighting sore knees and a case of bronchitis, Williams came off the bench to lead five UNH players in double figures in the Wildcats' victory over the Catamounts. Williams shot 7-of-11 from the field to score 14 points, plus she grabbed five rebounds and blocked two more shots.
Williams is now 18th in America East in overall rebounding with 5.1 boards per game and 7th in offensive rebounding by pulling down 2.35 offensive rebounds per game. In conference games only, the forward is sixth in field goal percentage, hitting 48.9 percent (45-of-92) of her shots, and tied for seventh in blocked shots with 13. With her four blocked shots over the last week, Williams has moved into a tie for 13th place on the UNH career blocked shots list with 37 blocks.
Williams was twice named Co-Rookie of the Week last season, on November 30, 2003, and February 29, 2004, and was voted onto the America East All-Rookie Team at the end of the 2003-04 season. She is the third Wildcat to receive the Player of the Week honor this season, joining Danielle Clark (Corinna, Maine) on November 22 and Lindsay Adams (Theresa, N.Y.) on February 7.
Williams and the rest of the Wildcats return to action on Wednesday, February 23, traveling to Boston to face the Northeastern Huskies at Solomon Court beginning at 7 p.m.
