PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) had 17 points as the University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team was defeated by Brown 77-62 in the first round of the Brown Classic Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. UNH now stands at 1-3 on the season, while the Bears improve to 2-4.
Matthias finished 6-9 from the floor and had 13 of her 17 points in the first half. Ebony Woods (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Salee-Marie Johnson (Brampton, Ontario) each finished with nine points for the ‘Cats while Emily Hardy (Westbrook, Conn.) added seven. Kate Poulin (Kitchener, Ontario) grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.
Tanara Golston led all scorers with 25 points for Brown.
After trading the lead seven times in the opening minutes, UNH went on a 14-2 run capped by a jumper by Woods with just under seven minutes to play to take a 29-18 lead. Brown stormed back with a 12-0 run of its own to take a 30-29 lead. The two teams traded the lead once more before the Bears staked themselves to a 35-32 halftime advantage.
The ‘Cats cut the lead to two on two occasions early in the second half, but Brown gradually pulled away, using a 6-0 run to open up a 48-39 advantage. Danielle Clark (Corinna, Maine) would then drain a three to pull UNH within six. The Bears and ‘Cats traded baskets before the hosts went on a 10-4 run to take a 60-48 lead with just under eight minutes to play. New Hampshire would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
UNH will face either No. 24 Boston College or Liberty in the consolation game of the Brown Classic Sunday at 1:00 pm. The next UNH home game is December 11, when the ‘Cats entertain Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a 7:00 contest at Lundholm Gymnasium.
