WEST HARTFORD--Senior center Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) and freshman forward Ray Williams (Missisauga, Ont.) of the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team were both honored on Wednesday afternoon at the annual America East Awards Banquet, which precedes the women's America East Conference tournament.
Matthias was named to the America East's second team for her outstanding efforts as UNH's top scorer and rebounder with 15.9 ppg. and 7.8 rpg. heading into the tournament. Matthias also led UNH with 43 blocks on the season and was among the nation's leaders in field goal percentage with a mark of .574 (174-303). Matthias has scored in double digits in 24 of 27 contests this season and has scored over 20 points six times. In the rebounding department she recorded double-digit rebounds eight times in 2003-04 and she recorded eight double-doubles as well for the 'Cats. Matthias is presently ranked fourth all-time at UNH in scoring with 1,469 points heading into the tournament. She is also ranked second all-time at UNH in rebounding with a mark of 864 total rebounds and she is second in career blocks in Durham with 150. Looking at her career bests, Matthias scored 30 points at Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2002, grabbed a best of 19 rebounds vs. Northeastern in January of this year and she blocked a career-high six shots vs. Brown in 2000.
Williams, who started the final nine regular season games for the 'Cats, was named to the America East All-Rookie squad for her outstanding efforts in her first year. Williams was the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 8.7 ppg. and 6.0 rpg and was a high-percentage shooter from the floor for the 'Cats with a mark of .557 (98-176). Williams also became known for her ability to record double-doubles, as she finished the regular season with a total of four. She also scored in double-digits 13 times, and in eight of her last nine games. Looking at her season-best performances. Williams scored 16 points vs. St. Bonaventure on Nov. 25, grabbed 13 rebounds vs. Stony Brook on Feb. 28 and she blocked an impressive five shots vs. Liberty on Dec. 7.
The No. 8 Wildcats begin their America East Tournament action on Wed., March 10 when they take on No. 9 seeded Stony Brook in first-round action. Game time is approximately 9 p.m or 30 minutes after the 7 p.m. game ends.
