BOSTON--Senior center Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) of the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team was named America East Co-player of the Week following her outstanding efforts in UNH's three most recent contests vs. St. Francis (N.Y.), Southern Methodist and Colgate.
During the team's 2-1 stretch, Matthias averaged 22.0 ppg. and 10.3 rpg with her best game coming vs. WAC opponent SMU. She scored 23 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked one shot for a double-double in the victory over the Mustangs. Matthias just missed two more double-doubles in the other games with 20 or more points in all three games, but she had eight rebounds vs. Colgate and nine at St. Francis.
Matthias was nearly unstoppable offensively during the week, connecting on 24-37 field goal attempts for an amazing shooting percentage of .649. With her three strong performances, her scoring average for the season broke the 20.0 ppg. mark. She is currently averaging 20.1 ppg and 8.2 rpg. in 2003-04. Matthias also recorded eight steals and five blocks during that same three-game stretch, including a season-high four steals vs. St. Francis.
Matthias is presently ranked second in the conference in scoring, rebounding and in blocked shots (16).
Fans will get to see the America East Co-player of the Week in action again at home on Wed., Jan. 7 when the Wildcats play their America East home-opener vs. Albany. Game time is 7 p.m. in Lundholm Gymnasium.
