HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Junior Anna Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) recorded a double-double by pouring in 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team to a 76-64 win over Hofstra here at Hofstra Arena this afternoon. The 25 points matches Matthias' career high which she set earlier in the season against Dartmouth.
Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats were Taylore Jarvis (Nazareth, Pa.) with 14 points, Kiki Proctor (Harrisburg, Pa.) 13 and Heidi Plencner (Hampton, N.H.) with 11. Kelly Donohue (Rochester, N.H.) dished out six assists. Jen Brickey led the Pride with 23 points.
After spotting Hofstra (8-16, 5-11) a 31-29 lead after the break, New Hampshire (8-16, 6-9) would go on a 17-4 run capped by a basket by Sarah Bushey (Champlain, N.Y.) with 14:21 remaining to go up 46-35. The hosts then scored 10 unanswered points capped by a Brickey jumper to pull within one with 11:35 to play. A layup by freshman Maren Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) and a Plencner trey over the next 47 seconds would push the lead back to six.
A Brickey three with 8:59 to play would halve UNH's lead, but that would be as close as Hofstra would get The Wildcats would seal the win by going 17-for-18 from the free throw line over the final 5:33 of the contest.
Hofstra led most of the first half and took a 16-10 lead, its largest of the first half, with 10:16 left in the opening stanza. The Pride owned a 29-23 lead with 1:32 in the half before back-to-back baskets by Jarvis and a Plencner jumper at the buzzer knotted the game at 29 at the half.
The Wildcats return home on Thursday (2/22) for a 7 p.m. tilt with Northeastern at the Whittemore Center.
