DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women’s basketball team was a 86-67 victor against ADD Zensko Kosarkarsko Drustvo Ilijara, a club team from Slovenia, in Saturday afternoon’s exhibition game at Lundholm Gymnasium.
UNH held a 44-28 halftime lead and maintained a comfortable advantage until ADD Ilijaro trimmed the deficit to single figures with 9:52 remaining in the game. The Slovenias closed within 66-60 three minutes later, but UNH converted a pair of steals into easy baskets to regain momentum an a 70-60 edge.
The Wildcats pulled away thereafter with strong foul shooting –– they made 10 of 12 in the final five minutes ; the ‘Cats were 25-for-31 for the game. Sophomore forward Anna Matthias (Guilford, Conn.) scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the decisive stretch run; she also finished with seven rebounds.
New Hampshire, which went 2-0 in exhibition play this season, built a double-digit lead (16-6) 7:53 into the game. The advantage never went below six points (20-14 at 9:43) and went as high as 18 points in the final two minutes.
Senior center Orsi Farkas (Budapest, Hungary) was one of four other ‘Cats to score in double figures with 15 points; the others were Heidi Plencner (Hampton, N.H.; 14 points), Aubrey Danen (Oconomowoc, Wisc.; 12, game-high eight rebounds) and Kelly Donohue (Rochester, N.H.; 10).
ADD Iliraja was led offensively by Maja Drozg (16 points) and Sasa Stubler and Barbara Skof, both of who scored 14.
UNH opens the 1999-2000 season Nov. 19 against Holy Cross. Tip off time at Lundholm Gymnasium is 7 p.m.
