Track and Field Sends Six to NCAA Regional
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire outdoor track & field team has sent six qualifiers to the 2011 NCAA East Regional that will take place May 26-28 at Indiana University's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
Graduate student Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H.) and senior Mike Simon (Durham, Conn.) qualified on the men's side, while graduate student Rita Ciambra (Hanover, N.H.), seniors Sydney Fitzpatrick (Billerica, Mass.) and Erica Jesseman (Scarborough, Maine), and junior Keely Maguire (Georgetown, Mass.) will compete for the women.
DeTurk, who will compete in the hammer throw Friday at 11 a.m., won the event at the New England Championships one week after submitting a runner-up performance at the America East Championships.
Simon, who will throw the javelin Thursday at 12 p.m., captured his fourth straight conference title in the event before placing third at New Englands.
For the women, Ciambra is set to compete in the pole vault Thursday at 6 p.m. Ciambra has been rewriting the record books over the past few weeks, as she set a new meet record in a winning effort at New Englands and captured her third title at the America East Championships, where she broke her own school mark as well as the all-time conference championship record.
Jesseman and Maguire will both run in the 10,000m Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Jesseman won the 5,000m at New Englands and finished fourth in the event at the America East Championships, where she also set a new school record. Maguire captured a title in the 10,000m at New Englands and placed fifth in the event at the conference meet.
Fitzpatrick runs the 3,000m steeplechase Friday at 8:30 p.m. Fitzpatrick won the 10,000m at the conference championships and finished second in the event at New Englands.
