DURHAM, N.H. – Graduate student Jeff Kaste (Atkinson, N.H.), the reigning America East Field Performer of the Week, turned in a trio of top-three performances and the University of New Hampshire men's outdoor track & field team won 10 different events as it played host to the Wildcat Invitational I at the Reggie F. Atkins Track on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats were joined at the non-scoring meet by intrastate rival Dartmouth College, Northeastern University, Holy Cross and America East foes the University of Vermont and the University of Maine.
Kaste placed second in the discus throw with a toss of 45.94 meters and was also third in both the shot put and hammer throw with respective marks of 15.55m and 55.39m. Junior Brice Paey (Milton, N.H.) won the shot put with a mark of 17.45m, while junior Paul DeTurk (Durham, N.H.) was victorious in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.34m. Fellow junior John Randall (Boscawen, N.H.) was fourth in the hammer at 54.02m.
In the high jump, freshmen Matthew Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) and Jason Guarente (Saugus, Mass.) placed first and fourth, respectively, with leaps of 2.01m and 1.96m.
Junior John Donaghy (Sutton, N.H.) and sophomore Jesse McElvain were first and second, respectively, in the pole vault as they cleared heights of 4.27m and 3.96m.
In the triple jump freshman Garrett Finn (Lebanon, N.H.) and sophomore Max Hoddwells (Wayne, Maine) finished second and third, respectively, with marks of 14.20m and 13.37m. Hoddwells was also third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.04 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Alex Macleod (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was second in 55.18.
Also on the track, freshmen Christopher Houston and Victor Adejuyigbe (Penacook, N.H.) placed first and second in the 100 meters, respectively, in times of 11.08 and 11.16. Adejuyigbe was also second in the 200m in 22.76, while senior Will Brehm (Pembroke, N.H.) won the event in 22.15.
In the 800m, sophomores Bill Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H.) and Sean Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass.), as well as senior Josh Kearns (Ridgefield, Conn.) and freshman Corey Duchemin (Manchester, N.H.), finished first, second, third and fourth, respectively, in times of 1:54.79, 1:56.24, 1:57.02 and 2:00.07.
Grad Student Ben Jenkins (Francestown, N.H.) won the 1500m in a time of four minutes, 00.30 seconds.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, seniors Matt O'Connor (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) and Marc Ouellette (Hopkinton, N.H.) finished first and second, respectively, in 9:26.30 and 9:29.64.
The Wildcats' 4x400-meter relay team was also a winner as it finished in 3:20.73.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday, April 10 at 11 a.m. as they host the Wildcat Invitational II right back at the Reggie F. Atkins Track.
