Men's Soccer Advances to America East Finals with 1-0 Win at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore forward Paul Bianchi (Essex, Vt.) tallied his first goal of the season in the 57th minute of the America East Semifinals at No. 1 Vermont to lift the No. 5 Wildcats to the final round of the America East Championship. The win brings the Wildcats to 7-7-5 on the year while Vermont bows out with an 8-5-5 record. New Hampshire will travel to the winner of Stony Brook vs. UMBC to play for the title on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.

In the first half, the Wildcats held a slight advantage on offense when they tallied five shots to Vermont's four. Aaron Smith (Loudon, N.H.) tallied the lone shot-on-goal for New Hampshire in the first half while Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) made a pair of saves in the half to preserve the 0-0 score.

At exactly 56:00 in the second half, Bianchi found the ball as it was misplayed by Vermont keeper Conor Leland and ripped a low shot past the keeper and into the net for the 1-0 advantage. The Wildcats contained the Catamount attack through the remainder of the stanza with solid defense and goaltending. In the 84th minute, Jonny Bonner bent a free kick on net for Vermont that was denied by an extended Worra. At the end of the second half, the Wildcats clinched a spot in the America East Conference Finals.

Worra tallied his seventh shutout of the season after making six saves in the effort. Leland allowed just one goal on the four shots he faced in net for Vermont for the decision. Vermont outshot New Hampshire by a margin of 11-8 in the contest.
