DURHAM, N.H.- Freshman forward Sean Coleman (Stratham, N.H.), who scored the game-winning goal against UMass, was selected as the America East Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference Monday afternoon. Furthermore, with the win over UMass this past weekend, the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team moved up to No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas Northeast Regional Poll.
The unbeaten Wildcats, who were previously ranked seventh, earned their fourth-straight win over the Minutemen, who advanced to the NCAA semifinals last season. Coleman broke the 1-1 tie just over five minutes into the second half to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead and the win. Fellow freshman Brad Hilton (Merrimack, N.H.) took a shot from deep in the right corner, which was blocked by a defender. The ball found its way to the foot of a charging Coleman, who fired into the top left corner of the net for his second goal of the season.
Senior forward Kyle Urso (Lombard, Ill.) earned the Wildcats’ first goal of the game to even the score, 1-1, four minutes before halftime. Sophomore goalkeeper Colin O’Donnell (Springfield, Mass), with a perfect 4-0-0 record, made three saves in the win for the Wildcats. The Minutemen’s lone goal was Massachusetts’ first against New Hampshire since Sept. 22, 2004.
Coleman has seen action in all seven games and scored his first collegiate goal, a game-tying tally, against LaSalle at the 2008 Smith Barney Classic.
Coleman and the rest of the Wildcats return to action Tuesday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Harvard.
