DURHAM, N.H.- Senior Kyle Urso (Lombard, Ill.) and junior Chris Banks (Westborough, Mass.) both notched a goal to propel the University of New Hampshire men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win against the University of Rhode Island at the 19th Annual Nike Fall Classic on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory the Wildcats improves to 2-0 and finished first in the 19th Annual Nike Fall Classic. The Rams drop to 1-1 on the season with the loss and finished second. Maine, who defeated Adelphi University 1-0 in today’s earlier match, earned third place, while Adelphi placed fourth.

Urso, who tallied his second game-winning goal in as many games, was selected as the tournament MVP, while Banks was selected to the All-Tournament team. Wildcats Mike McKee (Newtown, Pa.) and Joe Annese (Attleboro, Mass.) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

It looked as though the Rams would draw first blood as Josh Sousa drew out Wildcat goalkeeper Colin O’Donnell (Springfield, Mass.) midway through the first half, giving the Rhode Island forward a wide-open shot at the net. Sousa’s shot, however, missed wide left.

In the 29th minute, the Wildcats took advantage of a Rams foul as Urso, on a direct kick, drove the ball 43 yards, through traffic, into the lower left part of the net.

In the second half the Rams had two more opportunities to get on the board, but were unsuccessful in both. With just over 25 minutes remaining Kedan Crosby, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team, took a shot from 30 yards out on the right side. The ball bent left, but O’Donnell made a nice diving save, which kept the Rams scoreless. With just over ten minutes of action remaining, Crosby once again took a 30-yard shot, but the Rams’ scoring chance sailed just high of the crossbar.

The Wildcats secured the game with Banks’ second goal of the season with 47 seconds remaining. Urso, who earned the assist on the goal, played the ball quickly up the right side before crossing it to Banks. The forward took a hard shot, which Rams goalkeeper Chris Pennock stopped. The ball, however, deflected onto the foot of Banks who again fired it on goal, this time finding the back of the net.

O’Donnell, who tallied a career-high six saves in the match, earned the win for the Wildcats, while Pennock with seven saves was credited with the loss.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Burlington, Vt. to take part in the 2008 Smith Barney Classic. New Hampshire will face Memphis on Friday afternoon and Lasalle on Sunday, Sept. 7.
